About the Portal
This service (‘the Portal’) is an online tool managed by the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom (UKSC). It can be used by legal professionals on behalf of their clients or by people who do not have a solicitor, known as ‘litigants in person’.
You can securely submit, pay for and manage your cases online for the:
- Supreme Court of the United Kingdom
- Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC)
The Portal also handles initial applications to check whether the Court has jurisdiction to entertain an application.
When registering on the Portal, users should ensure that their email inbox is set up to receive email from noreply@supremecourt.uk.
If expecting correspondence from the Portal, users should check their spam/junk folder to ensure that correspondence has not been directed into such folders, Where this has happened, the status of the message should be adjusted so that future portal correspondence is received into the inbox.
Authorised users
Only authorised users may use the Portal for the purpose of managing cases. This applies to legal professionals and litigants in person.
Anyone intending to lodge an application with the Court should consult the relevant guidance [link to the anticipated Portal guidance] on how to create an account.
Where a party for a submitted case is associated with multiple authorised users, it is the responsibility of the party’s representatives to manage user access to the case. This includes notifying the Registry of addition/removal of authorised users to ensure that only relevant contacts have access to the case.
The Registry must be notified of any change in the status of an authorised user (for example, a legal professional who ceases to be involved in the case owing to a change of position).
User accounts will be deactivated six months after the conclusion of a case unless a user is involved in a further case at the same time. It is the responsibility of the authorised user to ensure that they have obtained any records they might require for their own purposes prior to the account being deactivated.
Disclaimer
The Portal supports the operation of the applicable court Rules and supporting Practice Directions. The Court accepts no liability for any failure of any authorised user to adhere to these rules when making use of the Portal.
If in doubt, authorised users should check with the Registry for guidance.
Use of documents
Authorised users should be aware that there is a presumption that the Court will publish on its website the following documents required as part of the filing process:
- Statement of Facts and Issues (SFI)
- Written cases of each party, including any supplemental documents related to these
When submitting documents to the Court, users are reminded that these will be used/published to support the transparent administration of justice and to enable accurate and fair reporting of court proceedings. This includes publication on the UKSC/JCPC websites before the appeal hearing, as well as retention online after the hearing, either on the UKSC/JCPC website or via The National Archives.
Where documents hold sensitive or confidential information or will cause the Court to breach any data protection or other obligations, such issues must be flagged either by making an application seeking permission for the documents to remain offline, or submitting an additional redacted version that is suitable for publication. The reasons for doing so should be made expressly clear when submitting the documents/application through the Portal. Additionally, if the publication of these documents will cause the Court to breach any data protection or other obligations, users must file an application seeking permission for these documents to remain offline.
In certain instances, the Registrar may elect not to place these documents on our websites. This may be for reasons of national security, or for other reasons where similar sensitivity is required. In these circumstances, the court user is encouraged to flag these concerns by making an application seeking permission for the documents to remain offline.
The documents will be published before the appeal hearing and will remain online either on the Court website or via The National Archives.
Data protection
Users of this service should take note of the Court’s privacy notice. Usage of this Portal requires personal data to be provided to enable the Court to perform its public task of administering justice. The Court also requires financial data to be provided in order to process any fees owed.
We will only retain your personal data for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes we collected it for. This includes for the purposes of satisfying any legal, accounting, or reporting requirements.
